On Tuesday, May 10th, 2011, SWAT chased and intercepted a pop-up afternoon thunderstorm that originally developed in Hamilton County. The storm quickly became severe and with steep lapse rates, hail was occurring all along the track of the storm. The storm moved Northeast into Madison and eventually Delaware Counties. We intercepted the storm in Madison County on State Road 9 just North of Anderson. We got pelted with 1.5″ diameter hail that lasted for several minutes. It was quite comical as a man mowing his yard continued to mow during the entire hail storm! The SWERV suffered a few minor dents but no major damage occurred.
Here is video of some of the hail that fell!
